How To Quit
Quit Smoking Programs
Stop smoking programs help smokers recognize and cope with some of the problems that can come up during the quitting process. They also provide support and encouragement in staying smoke-free. Studies have shown that the best programs will include either individual or group counseling. It’s important to choose a program that you think you can stick to. For example, if the program is located too far away from home, you will be less likely to stay committed.
Think about what works for you and keep in mind the following guidelines:
- Be wary about any program that sounds too good to be true, promises overnight success, is very costly, or claims to use a “secret” ingredient or magic pill. If you use discretion and do some research, you will be well on your way to finding a quit smoking program that fits your needs and your lifestyle.
- Make sure the group leader has the appropriate training in smoking cessation.
Telephone Support
- Every state provides quit smoking phone support. Call 1-800-QUIT NOW. This national number will connect you to your state’s quit smoking program.
- In Pennsylvania, the PA FREE Quitline is provided through a partnership with the American Cancer Society, and is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. When you call, a trained quit coach will ask you a series of questions about your tobacco use to help you decide if you are ready to quit smoking. The coach will offer you choices of free services including one-on-one coaching sessions (the coach will call you), self-help materials and referral to other programs in your community.
